Grooming

And now a word on grooming. This topic is polarizing. Not polarizing in that half the population is interested in the subject and the other is not, rather, polarizing in that half the population is interested in the subject and the other has no idea what grooming has to do with anything. They don't think about it and the ramifications it has if not done properly. So let's get into it.

Grooming is an element of professionalism that sends non-verbal messages to colleagues and customers alike. In our most surface of moments an unpolished pair of shoes, an unshaven face or a little too much caking on the mascara can ruin a promotion opportunity or implode a deal. We all make unfair judgements about those we interact with. It's human nature. And while it is not fair and shouldn't be something we do the fact of the matter is that it isn't going away so we might as well polish up our game and not let a rough exterior be a deterrent to something we want.

So what does grooming entail? Everything. Clean, pressed and properly fitted clothing. Kept hair on your head and on your face(fellas). Fingernails clean. Shoes polished. Socks that are not distracting. Belts that match shoes. Handbags that aren't tattered. Jewelry that is not overly used. Piercings that aren't too extravagant for your audience. I could go on and on, but I think you get it.

Sales is a hard enough profession on its own. Don't discount yourself right out of the gate. It's time to freshen up for some and grow up for others. Take a minute and tighten it up today. You might just get yourself a compliment and a confidence boost to go and close a big one.

Stoked!
