The French Lunch Break
I tried to do it and failed. Really hunkered down and gave it a go. I studied my competitors, emulated their maneuvers. Even had the right tools to succeed, but alas I just couldn’t pull off the French Lunch Break.
There I was in Paris’ beautiful Tuileries Garden. Flanked to my left and right were two fashionably dressed businessmen. They were seated before my arrival and they were seated when I broke a solid ninety minutes later. Thought I had one beat. The businessman with two cans of Kronenburg staged up on an adjacent chair got up momentarily only to return minutes later. Pit stop I guess. Both had routines down. Cigarette and a pivot to the phone. Fingers through the hair. Ear buds in to take a call then ear buds out. One more cigarette. Now soak up some sun. This went on for at least the ninety minutes I was there and it was blissful to watch. Trying was equally as fun and that’s where my appreciation comes in.
There was nothing that struck me as lazy or unproductive. They presented themselves with confidence and swagger. These were men enjoying a beautiful day in a gorgeous park reflecting on their morning and preparing for their afternoon. A time of reflection I’d say that most American professionals only do when the latest trend tells them to. This is routine to the French and it’s why I’m fascinated with their business culture.
I can’t say I’d advocate for such a long lunch break- I’d rather get home earlier to be with my family- but what I will try and do is take at least a portion of my midday meal break and reflect on the day. There’s health in that precious time.
Stoked!
